Attractions
Kronborg is located right next to Helsingør Nordhavn. Kronborg is one of Northern Europe's most significant Renaissance castles and known worldwide from Shakespeare's Hamlet. The cannons at Kronborg fire salutes on royal anniversaries, and when the Royal Ship Dannebrog passes in the Sound. Kronborg got its name in 1577 from King Frederik II, but the history goes all the way back to the 1420s, when Erik of Pomerania built the heavily fortified castle Krogen . From here, the king's men controlled shipping in the Sound and collected the so unpopular Øresund customs abroad. It is possible to get guided tours of the castle.
Sankt Olai Church is Elsinore's cathedral. The church is named after the Norwegian patron saint King Olav the Holy. Until 1819, the church was Elsinore's only parish church. St. Olai's Church, as it stands now, was completed in 1559, but the cathedral's history dates back to the 13th century, when it was the size of a small Romanesque village church.
