The area is known for its special tubular houses. The houses were built after the storm surge in 1872 and maintained according to a local plan that ensures the special building style and environment in Hesnæs.

Hesnæs city is an attraction in itself. The village is characterized by its distinctive old houses, where both the walls and the roof are wrapped in straw. This building style is not seen anywhere else in Denmark.
