About 17 nautical miles southwest of Athens is the island of Aegina, which is part of the Saronic Islands. The island is a fairly popular excursion destination for Athens citizens. In addition, the island is also known for the production of pistachios sold from every street corner. Indeed, many do not know that Aegina was the capital of Greece during the period 1827-1829. Historically, the island played a major role in the Battle of Salamis.

Aegina has been inhabited since about the year 3,500 BC, so there are some archaeological sites. Don't cheat yourself for a visit to Temple Aphaia. If not the most beautiful, then it is one of the most beautiful classical temples in Greece. The Aphaia Temple stands overlooking Aegina, and can also be experienced from the sea side at a distance.
